Weekend Reflections for 3/6/15
The Father's House
"Jesus made a whip out of cords and drove them all out of the temple area, with the sheep and oxen, and spilled the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables, and to those who sold doves he said, 'Take these out of here, and stop making my Father's house a marketplace.'" Jn 2:15-16
The Jewish Temple authorities cooperated with their Roman oppressors and perverted the purpose and experience of entering God's dwelling among them. It had been a house of prayer where His children could again experience His love for them and the sinner know His compassion and forgiveness. Now it had become a place to barter and haggle, to cheat and extort, especially from the poor. Love and mercy now had a high price. Jesus knew that his Father's generosity had no limit, no price tag. His words and actions will be authenticated in his resurrection.
We are now the Father's house, His dwelling among us. We are already living His gift of eternal life. Do I put a price on my love and forgiveness for others? Especially my spouse, my children, friends and co-workers? What do I expect or even demand in return? Or do I freely share what the Father has lavished on me? During this Lent can I at least have a marked-down clearance sale?
