Weekend Reflections for 6/26/15

Fear and Trust 

"Your daughter has died; why trouble the teacher any longer?" Disregarding the message that was reported, Jesus said to the synagogue official, Jairus, "Do not be afraid; just have faith." (Mk 5:35-36)

In Sunday's Gospel we read the story of two miraculous cures: the woman with a hemorrhage and Jairus' daughter. Both were filled with fear and desperation: they have to do something, anything that might help. The woman knew it was forbidden for a woman to approach a man in public, so she did what she could: she touched the hem of Jesus' clothes as he walked by. She believed and trusted and was cured but Jesus won't let her remain anonymous. He wants to look her in the eye and call her "daughter" and let her know that it was her faith and trust in him that cured her.

Jairus had to be frustrated with the woman, to put it mildly, because Jesus was on his way to save his daughter. He was the man of the family, so important in Jewish law and culture, responsible for the health and well-being of his loved ones. Was his daughter dying because of his sins? She was his precious child: didn't God understand that? And the devastating, gut-wrenching, soul-stabbing message: your little girl is dead. What parent wouldn't collapse into their pain at such a message?

I'm sure that Jesus took Jairus by the shoulders, looked him in the eye and said: Trust Me!

And his daughter had a good lunch and did a skip and a twirl and hugged her daddy.
