Weekend Reflections for 6/19/15
Faith in the Lord
"Jesus woke up, rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, 'Quiet. Be still.' The wind ceased and there was great calm. Then He asked them, 'Why are you terrified? Do you not yet have faith?'" (Mk 4:39-40)
Jesus was exhausted and fast asleep in the boat when the violent storm came up suddenly. The Apostles are literally scared to death and cry out in fear and panic.
The Lord awakens and calms the wind and the sea and then He challenges them about their fear. They are still trying to figure out who Jesus is. Who could He be that He has such great power over nature? How could He be so calm in the face of such danger? Yes, their faith is still budding and growing very slowly but coming to believe that Jesus is Emmanuel, God with us.
Our lives can certainly be stormy at times, marked by uncertainties, conflicts, struggles and doubts. Hopefully our faith always takes us to the Lord and especially at such times when we might feel overwhelmed by our difficulties. We do what we can humanly to solve our problems but we can and should also turn to the Lord in faithful prayer. "When I called, you answered me; you built up strength within me." (Ps 138:3)
