Weekend Reflections for 6/12/15
Growth in the Lord
"This is how it is with the kingdom of God; it is as if a man were to scatter seed on the land and would sleep and rise night and day and through it all the seed would sprout and grow, he knows not how. Of its own accord the land yields fruit ... for the harvest has come." (Mk 4:26-7, 29)
The farmer does what he can to produce a harvest: he prepares the ground, sows the seed, pulls the weeds and prays for rain. Then he waits. He can't make it happen or hurry the process; he just waits and prays. It's sort of like parents raising their children: you try to keep them clean, dressed, fed, protected and you pray a lot. They just grow on their own and the next thing you know, they have student loans!
Jesus is telling us that in his Father's Kingdom our Father is always at work quietly, secretly, behind the scene, underneath it all. He invites us to cooperate with His plans for us to become more and more like our brother Jesus, to allow Him to feed our growth in the Eucharist, cleanse us in Reconciliation, strengthen and guide us with their Spirit. Our role is to listen to His Word, follow His promptings, continue Jesus' works of compassion and love for others. And through it all to trust that in fact it is happening. We can't make it happen or hurry it; we don't have to. The Father's in charge and it is His wonderful plan for each of us.
